Frequently Asked Questions

Every year we have the same questions asked time and time again.  Please take a look at the questions and answers below before contacting us.

How do I know if my daughter is ready for camp?

Number 1 always is - does she want to be at camp?  We are outdoors all day in the hot, hot July sun.  Girls who already have a packed daily schedule will be dragging and cranky by the end of the week.  Can your daughter be happy playing and learning with girls who are not their best friend?  Can she separate from mom and be independent for a full day of activity?  Just a few things to think about before camp begins.

What will my daughter do while at camp?

Your daughter will do lots of different activities everyday all centered around the camp theme.  We have arts and crafts, hiking,, songs, games archery and our most popular event FISHING!  We also have tie dye, every girl's favorite.

What are the camp hours?

Camp starts with drop off in the mornings at 9:00 and ends with pick up at 3:30.  We do not have extended care hours.  If your daughter must come in late or leave early, please park at the farm museum and walk into camp first aid shelter located next to Shelter 2.  The director will have your daughter brought to you or have your daughter escorted to her unit.

Can I meet the staff?

The Sunday before camp the staff will be at the park running around and getting organized.  You are welcome to stop by and say hello or drop off medication.  The first aider will be there.  This year we will distribute shirts the first day of camp.

What about boo-boos at camp?

We have staff members with training to handle all boo-boos that occur.  If anything serious happens you will receive a call from the camp director.  We are also trained to handle any existing medical conditions.

Communication during camp hours?

We do not encourage girls to call home or to carry cell phones, they get lost and damaged.  If we have exhausted all other solutions to a problem we do have cell phones at camp and a landline, it belongs to the park please do not call them.  We do not have internet access at camp but the director does return emails the same evening if at all possible.  If you feel you need to talk to the director during camp hours please call 571-235-2880.  The director tries to answer all calls that come in but remember she may be working with a girl.  Leave a message and she will return your call.  Also, rememeber that the director arrives very early to camp.  Emails sent after 6 am will not be seen until after 5 pm.

How are unit assignments made?

Units are created by age and the grade level  that are completed in June.  We do not place 5 year olds with 12 year olds.  It just does not work.  We do try to honor buddy requests but it is not always possible.  Camp is not a place for a full troop to be in one unit,  Remember, each unit is full of new best friends that your daughter has not met yet.  Meeting new people is part of the Girl Scout experience.

What are the facilities at camp?

We are outside.  The only air conditioned portion of camp is the first aid shelter.  It is to be used only for girls who are not feeling well, not as a cool down or I just do not feel like participating.  We use outdoor toilets.  They are clean and well kept.    We have lots of potable ice water spread out around camp.

What should my daughter wear to camp?

We are in a public park.  Please have your daughter wear her camp shirt every day.  It is for safety reasons.  Closed toe shoes and socks need to be worn at all times.  Shorts are preferable but long pants are fine, just remember your daughter is going to get very hot.  Your daughter will also be given a bandana to wear while at camp that is hers to take home at the end of the week.  We use the bandannas as identification tools, each unit is a different color, and as an extra layer of sun and tick protection.

What kind of food is served at camp?

The first four days of camp are brown bag.  Please pack a healthy nut free lunch for your daughter.  There is no refrigeration at camp.  We do try to keep the lunches out of direct sunlight. On Friday we do hold a camp wide pizza party.  We have pizza, chips, cookies and lemonade.   We do provide a daily treat to the campers.  Everyone will have  freezer pops, homemade ice cream and another yet to be determined this year at least once during the week  We do make arrangements for girls with allergies and dietary restrictions.  If your daughter is lactose intolerant or gluten free, for example, we will have an alternate treat if needed.  We do not serve anything with nuts.  Please be specific on your health forms

Nuts at camp

With more and more nut allergies being identified we keep camp a nut free zone.  I know the easiest lunch for campers is a old fashioned PB&J but nut allergies are very serious and we all need to work together to keep camp a safe and happy place for all.  Girls that bring nut products to camp will be removed from her group and eat separately.  They will then be asked to wash hands and face thoroughly before rejoining her unit.

Will my daughter earn badges at camp?

The short answer is maybe.  Camp will be focusing on a couple of scout badges, and try its.  The website will be updated at the end of camp explaining what activities your daughter has completed at the various centers and what requirements for the badges/try its have been completed.  Give a copy to your scouts troop leader.  Daily attendance is very important as your scout could miss out on a major component of a badge.

How will I get updates about camp?

Before camp starts you will receive placement and unit assignments through email.  Be sure to check the email tracker page if you feel you are missing information.  If you have not received an email and one is listed on the email tracker page please contact the camp director at gsleader109@gmail.com.  After camp starts we will make daily updates through the home page of this site and an evening email.  At any time if you have a question or need more information than has been provided on the site please email or call the camp director. We also have a secret Facebook page.Only parents, guardians and staff will have access. The link will be sent separately. You must ask to join.We check our database and then approve.

Where do I drop off and pick up my camper?

Please refer to the pickup form sent with your welcome packet.

Why do I need to use the pickup form and copy my id?

The short answer is to protect your camper.  With having the id we know who picked up your child and can give it to police.  Do I think this will happen, no but better safe than sorry.  If the id on the page does not match the face at the car wheel they will be asked to pull over and I will be called to verify information.  GSCNC and I are trying to protect your child.  We have never had  a problem and we are determined to never have a problem with a lost child.

I need to pick up early or drop off my camper early.  What do I do?

If you let me know you are picking up your camper early we will have them ready for you.  Use entrance #2 to Claude Moore Park.  Please park at the far end of the Heritage Farm Museum and walk into camp.  At the end of the gravel road you will find our first aid station and camp HQ.  You can sign your camper out here.  Please have the camper pickup form with your id copied onto it.  We have to have it to release your camper.  If you are dropping off your camper late the process is the same without the form.  Bring the camper to first aid and we will get campers to their unit.

Camp Facebook page

There is a camp facebook page! This is a secret group that you will need to request permission to join. It will not be available until shortly before camp starts. Only parents and staff members can join. This is for pictures and the occasional message that will be sent via email as well. As we take pictures throughout the day we will upload to the page. You can follow us throughout our adventures. We are very protective of the page so if we decline your request to join contact me and I will take another look. The link will be sent via email once your registration is complete and all forms have been received.
